2010 Programs

February 11, 2010 – Plant Propagation/Seed Starting w/ OSU Summit County Master Gardener, Tom Bouton.  Tom has gardened over 40 years and has earned his Advance Certification Training.  He also propagates a large variety of the plants at Stan Hywet Hall and volunteers there as well in the gardens.

March 11, 2010 – Roses 101 w/OSU Summit County Master Gardener, Joan Gangle.  Joan lives in Copley and is a certified rosarian who grows over a hundred different kinds of roses.  She will cover soil amendment, diseases and the best roses to grow in Northern Ohio.

April 8, 2010 – Clematis; Why You Need to Grow Them w/ Deb Hardwick of Columbus, Ohio.  Deb, who has over 300 varieties of clematis with over 500 specimens on her acres of property in Columbus, is on a personal mission to educate about as she puts it “one of the most beautiful, versatile and easy to grow flowers giving true perennial pleasure year after year.

May 13, 2010 – Ohio Wines “What You Didn’t Know About Them”  w/executive director of the Ohio Wine Growers Association in Geneva, Ohio Donniella Winchell.  Dee will explain the different types of Ohio wines, their bottle shapes and how to choose them.

June 10, 2010 -  Beneficial Plants for Bees w/Denise Ellsworth, horticulture educator for OSU Extension program in Summit County and beyond.  Denise holds two Science degrees from OSU in Environmental Education and Plant Pathology and is also a garden writer for the Akron Beacon Journal and The Cleveland Plain Dealer.  She will elaborate on the best plants to draw bees to the garden.

July 8, 2010 – How to Choose Plants for a Chocolate Garden w/ James Funai, professor of Plant Science Technology at Cuyahoga Community College.  Jim is a OSU graduate of Horticulture and he will explore the different types of chocolate scent/color perennials for a scrumptious smelling, different type of garden.

August 12, 2010 – Garden Club Picnic at the home of Murtini Eisenberger

September 9, 2010 – “Arranging for the Holidays” w/Marcie Pietrowski, owner of Sunshine Flowers in Parma, Ohio.  Marcie is a professional florist, a member of the Florist Association and has been arranging flowers all of her life.  She will explain the tricks of the trade that florists use to make spectacular holiday arrangements.

October 14, 2010 – Garden of the Year Presentation

November 18, 2010 – Swag Making for the Holidays & a program of How Important Trees Are In Our Lives” w/ Sue Mottl, landscape arborist for the City of Stow, Ohio.  Sue is a OSU graduate of Horticulture and a educator for various garden workshops along with the master gardener program.  She will tell how to choose the best trees for use in the landscape and why we need them.
